A financial windfall that was never his to keep has landed a Dandora man in court after he pleaded guilty to five counts relating to the wrongful retention and use of Sh250,000 erroneously sent to his bank account.

The case began on September 4, 2026, when the complainant erroneously transferred Sh250,000 from his bank account to another account belonging to Amos Ochieng.

What should have been a straightforward financial transaction instead set the stage for a criminal investigation after the money landed in the wrong hands.

Following this, detectives from the Wilson Airport swung into action to establish the circumstances surrounding the erroneous transfer and trace the money.

The detectives subsequently obtained a court order in JKIA Miscellaneous Criminal Application No. E184 of 2026, authorising investigations into the recipient’s bank account.

The probe established that the suspect had withdrawn Sh150,000 in three instalments before the bank blocked the remaining balance.

As a result, detectives launched a manhunt for the suspect, who was eventually trailed and arrested at his hideout near Total Petrol Station in Dandora on October 23, 2026.

Today, October 26, 2026, the suspect was arraigned before the Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court, JKIA, where he faced one count of intentional withholding of an electronic payment delivered erroneously, among four other counts.

The suspect pleaded guilty to all five counts and was convicted accordingly. He remains in custody as he awaits sentencing on November 17, 2026.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reminds members of the public that Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, criminalises the intentional withholding of an electronic payment delivered in error. Anyone who receives money erroneously should notify their bank immediately and follow the official reversal process. An erroneous credit is not a licence to spend.
